Unpopular opinion: I think fixing old books with wheat paste is overrated

Last year at a workshop in Portland, I tried a synthetic PVA on a 1920s novel and it held up way better than the traditional paste I used to swear by. Has anyone else noticed a real difference in durability after 6 months on the shelf?

Oh man, I had the exact same thing happen with a 1930s mystery novel I worked on - the PVA blend just didn't crack or warp like the wheat paste always seemed to after a few months.

Right? Wheat paste always flakes off on me after a month or two.
