A gardener in Ohio changed how I see my whole plant shelf setup
I was talking to this retired lady at a community swap near Columbus last Saturday, and she said, 'You're collecting plants, not growing them,' after I bragged about my 40 pots. She pointed out that I'd never repotted any of them since I bought them 3 years ago, and that hit different because she was right, I was just buying for the look. Has anyone else had a stranger call out a habit you thought was a hobby?

So what's actually wrong with collecting for the look? A lot of people buy art and never paint anything, and nobody walks up to them and says they're doing art wrong. Plants are decor for tons of folks, and keeping a pothos alive in the same pot for 3 years is honestly a win, not some moral failure. That lady decided your 40 pots had to mean something deeper, but maybe you just like how your shelf looks, and that's a real reason. She also doesn't know your life, maybe you tried repotting once and killed something and got scared off. Not every hobby needs to turn into a project with homework. You can enjoy the shelf you built and still be doing it right.
