A neighbor's compost bin made me ditch the fertilizer aisle

I used to buy those big bags of synthetic fertilizer every spring, maybe $60 a year at the big box store. Then last month, my neighbor across the street let me peek into her three bin setup in Greenville, and she showed me how her tomatoes just exploded after using the compost. She said, 'You're basically feeding the soil, not the plant,' and that stuck with me. I started a small pile with kitchen scraps and leaves in my yard, and I'm curious if anyone here has seen a real difference in their flower beds after switching to homemade compost?

And that whole "feed the soil, not the plant" thing really clicked for me too after a couple seasons. I noticed my flower beds just looked happier, like the blooms lasted longer and the colors were deeper, even though I was using way less stuff on them. The soil itself got softer and darker, and I started seeing earthworms everywhere, which felt like a good sign. I still keep a little bag of synthetic around for my picky container plants, but the beds that get compost basically run themselves now. Just give it time, your first batch might be clumpy and weird, but by next year you'll be hooked.
