A retired botanist at the Chicago Botanic Garden showed me the trick to reading fern fiddleheads
Last spring I was peering at a patch of ferns along the shoreline path at the Chicago Botanic Garden when a man in his seventies leaned over and pointed at the curl of a fiddlehead, explaining that the tighter the spiral, the closer the fern is to unfurling. He mentioned he had been cataloging native ferns there for 22 years. It made me wonder how many of these little tells I have been walking past my whole life, so what is one small field clue you learned from someone else?
