Bought a $60 soil test kit last spring and I'm still not sure if it was the best or worst buy of my life
So last April I grabbed one of those home soil test kits at a garden center in Sacramento for about $60, mostly because my tomatoes kept coming up yellow no matter what I did. The good side is it showed my pH was way low, like 5.2, so I finally added lime and the plants actually turned around by July. The bad side is I found out later the cheap probes are kind of unreliable, and a $15 lab sample would've told me more for less money. Part of me thinks the kit saved my whole summer crop and part of me feels like I paid extra for guesswork. So which side are you all on, are home test kits worth keeping in the shed or is mailing soil off the smarter move? And what price point would actually get me to trust one of these things?
