Bought a 'rare' variegated Monstera cutting online for $75, it was just painted.

The seller had great photos, but the white streaks washed off with the first watering. I should have known a price that low was a red flag. Has anyone else been tricked by a fake plant listing?

Wait they actually painted it on? That's a whole new level of scamming.

Honestly @hunt.jennifer, I kinda get why they'd do it. It's more like a temporary fix than a real scam.

Nah man, a temporary fix is like covering a scratch with some touch up paint. Doing a whole respray just to hide damage is straight up dishonest. That's not a fix, that's a trap for whoever buys it next. If they were honest about it being a quick patch job that's one thing, but hiding it like that is shady.

Check the paint with a wet rag next time. If it comes off, you know they cut corners. Always test surfaces before you buy anything used.
