Hot take: I hit 300 species on my life list at a rest stop in Flagstaff and felt nothing
I counted up my life list last week and landed on exactly 300 species, and the one that did it was a stupid little mustard flower growing through a crack in the pavement at a truck stop outside Flagstaff. I sat there with my phone trying to get a good enough pic for the ID app and I just felt flat, like the number was supposed to mean more than the plant did. Maybe it is because most of those 300 came from quick glances out a windshield instead of actually sitting with anything. Does anyone else hit a milestone like that and wish they had spent the time learning ten plants deep instead of 300 plants shallow?
300 species and the big finale is a mustard weed in a truck stop parking lot, that's a pretty solid punchline for the universe to hand you. In my experience the number chasers and the deep divers are just wired different, and neither one is wrong, but your mileage may vary on whether the list is even the point. Ten plants you actually know beats 300 you drove past, at least in my book.
