Overheard a lady at the nursery say she waters her succulents once a month

I was grabbing some compost at the local garden center when I heard a woman tell a friend she only waters her succulents every 30 days and they still thrive. I've been drowning mine every week and losing half of them to rot. Has anyone else found a solid watering schedule that actually works for these things?

Yep, once a month is the sweet spot for most common succulents like jades or echeverias, especially if you're keeping them in pots with drainage holes. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings then give them a good soak until water runs out the bottom. I killed a bunch before I learned to stick my finger an inch into the dirt and only water when it's bone dry.

Yeah, the finger test is the real trick. It's funny how so many problems in life come down to just checking things more often before you assume they're fine.

I read somewhere that overwatering is actually the #1 killer of houseplants, way more common than underwatering. People just want to take care of their plants so they water them too much. @wade_dixon is right about the finger test, that inch deep check is the only way to really know. I've started doing it with all my plants and have way less yellow leaves now.
