Talking to my neighbor about his 40 year old garden made me rethink mine

My neighbor Ray, who's 74 and lives three houses down, showed me his tomato patch last Saturday. He said he hasn't rotated crops in 20 years and just adds compost from his own pile, I've been doing the whole fancy chart thing with 5 year schedules. He told me 'plants ain't that picky, they just want food and shade' and honestly it hit different after I saw his vines loaded with fruit. Has anyone else ditched the textbook methods for something simpler and seen better results?
