That old greenhouse guy told me to stop bottom-watering my seedlings and I laughed at him until half of them damped off in a week

He said the soil stays too wet and causes root rot, but I thought bottom-watering was foolproof because it worked fine last year, so which method actually wins out for delicate starts like peppers and tomatoes?

This is just like the person who swears by their cast iron pan but never oils it properly and then blames the pan for everything sticking. Every method works GREAT until you miss one small detail and it all falls apart. Real lesson here is that gardening tricks aren't magic spells, they're just tools that still need you to pay attention.

Bottom watering foolproof? Yeah just like my old truck is foolproof until the transmission blows. You probably kept the water tray too deep or let it sit too long. Seedlings need that top soil to dry out a bit between drinks. Peppers and tomatoes are divas about airflow too. Damping off is basically the plant version of catching pneumonia in wet socks.

Bottom watering has its place, but calling it foolproof is like saying a slow cooker can't burn a meal. People forget that every method has a failure point if you ignore the basics. @alext52 is right about airflow too. This is just another case where overcomplicating simple things makes a mess. Seedlings are unforgiving, but so is pretty much everything that needs attention at the right time.
