TIL that alpine plants can survive being buried under snow for 8 months straight

I was reading a paper from the University of Colorado last night about cushion plants up at 12,000 feet. Turns out some species photosynthesize under the snowpack in early spring when light still gets through. I always figured they just hibernated all winter, but they're actually slowly building energy while frozen. Has anyone else found a plant fact that just rewired how they look at a whole ecosystem?
