A brick pile incident with my little girl
I was prepping bricks for a patio. My daughter got too close and knocked one loose. It dropped near her feet, scaring us both. I now keep bricks in a covered bin until use.

Glad she's okay, that sounds scary.

My cousin is a paramedic and he told me they get calls every summer for brick pile or cinder block accidents. He said a single brick falling from waist height can break a kid's foot bone. That really stuck with me. I used to stack them too but now I lay them all out flat in a grid on a tarp. It takes up more space but I just work in smaller sections. The peace of mind is worth the extra time it takes to set up.

Yeah, that moment of pure scare is the worst. After my own close call, I started storing bricks flat on the ground, never stacked, until the minute I'm ready to lay them. I also make a rule that kids can't be in the work zone unless I'm actively watching their hands and feet. That covered bin is a smart move.

Never stacking bricks even for a minute? That's a level of caution I've never considered (and I'm pretty careful). Spreading them all out flat must use up your whole driveway or yard. How do you manage to keep them from getting in the way of everything else? It sounds like a total pain, but after a scare, I get why you'd do it. Still, I'd probably trip over them more than anything.
