A foreman in Des Moines told me to soak my trowel in a bucket before laying, and I brushed it off for 2 years
Finally tried it on a batch of mortar that kept dragging and the difference in how the mud slid off was night and day. Anyone else have a small prep habit like this they ignored way too long?

The "night and day" thing is where I'd push back a bit. A wet trowel helps the mud slide but it can water down the mix right at the surface. I've had boards look great going on and then cure soft in spots. Give me a dry trowel and a slightly looser batch any day.
