An old timer in Gary showed me a level trick with a string and I still use it on every corner
Was laying block on a garage in Gary, Indiana back in April and this retired mason named Walt stopped by to watch for a bit. I had my 4 foot level on the corner and he says "that bubble lies to you once the block gets cold," then pulls a chalk line out of his pocket and shows me how to check the corner with a string and a couple of bricks. He ran the line corner to corner and you could see my wall was off about a quarter inch over 6 courses, which the level never caught. He just shrugged and said most guys never learn it because nobody slows down to show them, so I've been checking corners with a string since then. Anyone else got one of those small tricks passed down that your tools can't do?
