Had a mortar mix that was setting up way too fast in the Phoenix heat yesterday
Out of desperation, I grabbed a bottle of Gatorade from my cooler and mixed a splash in. It actually bought me an extra 15 minutes of workable time before it started to crust. Anyone else ever try something weird like that to fight the clock?

Ever wonder if the sugar in the Gatorade is what did it? I've heard of guys using soda for the same reason, like a flat Coke or something. Makes me think any sugary drink might slow the chemical reaction down a bit. Might have to keep a cheap bottle of pop in the truck just for emergencies next time it's a hundred degrees out.

Sugar can actually speed up corrosion in some metals though.

You ever tried cleaning up dried soda off an engine block? That sticky mess attracts dirt and grime like crazy, and depending on the metal, the sugar can definitely accelerate corrosion if it sits too long. @patel.morgan is right to point that out, I've seen battery terminals eaten up by old pop spills. If you're gonna keep a drink in the truck for emergencies, I'd stick with plain water or maybe a low-sugar Gatorade, and still flush the area with fresh water after using it.
