I laid 1,200 bricks in a single day on a foundation job in Toledo last month, which was a personal record I didn't think I could hit.
It mattered because it showed me that using a laser level to set my line pins instead of a string line saved me about 30 minutes of setup time per wall, letting me focus on laying instead of fussing with alignment.

String lines are more reliable than lasers for a true level. You might have laid more bricks, but the foundation could be off.

But is it that big a deal?

Yeah, it can be a huge deal later.

Used to swear by string lines myself, figured lasers were just another gadget to go wrong. Then I borrowed a buddy's rotary laser for a retaining wall job last spring and it was night and day. Set up once, walked the whole perimeter without stopping to adjust pins, and my line was dead true across 60 feet. Your mileage may vary depending on the site conditions, but for me the time savings were real and I haven't touched a string since.
