My foreman Sal bet me $50 I couldn't lay 400 brick in a day on the Franklin St. job
I was 22 and thought I was hot stuff, so I took it. Sal's only rule was I had to keep my line tight, no slopping mortar over the edge to hide gaps. Made it to 387 by quitting time and he paid me anyway, saying the crooked ones would've cost more than fifty bucks to fix. Anyone else get humbled by an old timer who actually knew what he was talking about?
Sal paying you anyway is the part I'd argue with. He told you the crooked ones would cost more than fifty bucks to fix, which means he knew you'd already lost and still handed over the cash. To me that's not getting humbled, that's getting a free pass. An old timer who really knew what he was talking about would've made you tear out the bad ones and lay them right before payday. The lesson sticks way harder when your own hands have to fix the mess. Pushing back on this because I've seen guys come up thinking close enough is fine, and it's the ones who never had to redo their work that stay sloppy. Sal sounds like a good boss but maybe too soft a teacher.
