The guy mixing mud at the Columbus site swore by 3 parts sand to 1 lime and now my wall is soft
A mason named Dale at the Columbus job off Livingston Ave convinced me last month to go 3 parts sand to 1 part lime for a garden wall since "it's how they did it in the old days," and I ran with it for about 30 feet. Two hard rains later I can dig a screwdriver shank halfway into the joints, and a rub with my thumb takes the mortar right off. Did I just mix it too wet for that ratio, or was Dale's recipe a bad move in the first place?

Dale's recipe was fine, 3:1 lime mortar stays soft by design, that's the point.
