Warning: My old mortar mixer gave out on a big job in Phoenix last week

I was halfway through mixing a batch for a retaining wall when the motor just quit... no smoke, just dead. It was a 15 year old unit I got from my uncle. I had to run to the rental place and grab a new one, which cost me $85 for the day and put me two hours behind. Has anyone else had a mixer die on them like that, and is it worth fixing an old one?

That "motor just quit" moment is the worst, especially on a big job. You think it's worth opening it up to check the brushes or just calling it a day?

Man, you ever have a day where you just stare at a dead tool and wonder if you're the problem? I spent a solid hour once trying to fix a trimmer that just needed gas... I say crack it open, what's the worst that could happen? At least then you know if you're having a simple fix kind of day or a "time to buy a new one" kind of day.

My buddy had his table saw motor die mid-cut last week. He cracked it open, found the brushes were totally shot, just crumbled to dust. A quick parts run and he was back at it before lunch, @the_drew. Sometimes it's a five minute fix, sometimes it's a boat anchor.
