Appreciation post: the $1.29 bag of split peas at Aldi on 8th Street fed me 6 dinners last week
I'm not joking. Bought one bag last Monday, cooked it with an onion, some garlic, and the ham bone my neighbor was gonna toss. That's it. Six nights of soup. I froze half and ate the rest with bread from the day-old rack (99 cents).
Here's my hot take: everybody acts like eating on a budget means rice and beans and suffering. Split peas are better than rice. Thicker, more filling, and you don't have to soak them overnight. I don't get why people sleep on them.
So what's your go-to that's under two bucks a pound and actually fills you up? I'm not looking for 'meal prep tips,' I want the actual cheap stuff you buy every week.
