Found out a 5 lb bag of potatoes costs less than a single box of pasta now

Checked my grocery receipt last night and saw potatoes at $2.49 for 5 pounds while the store brand spaghetti was $1.89 for one pound, which got me wondering how many meals I could stretch out of those potatoes versus the pasta, anyone else notice this shift?

Man, potatoes are totally the underdog right now. I can do a baked potato topped with chili or broccoli and cheese for almost nothing per serving. Hash browns for breakfast, roasted wedges for dinner, and mashed potatoes stretch forever. Your mileage may vary, but I've been buying spuds every week and skipping the pasta aisle.

Five pound bag for $3, lasts me two weeks easy.

My mom used to say potatoes were "poor people food" back in the 90s, and now I kind of get what she meant but in a different way. Last week I paid $4 for a box of generic wheat crackers that barely lasted two lunches. But I can buy a 10 pound bag of russets for the same price and have them for breakfast hash, lunch soup, and dinner roasted with chicken thighs. It feels like the grocery store is secretly punishing anyone who wants convenience over bulk. Even my neighbor who does meal prep told me she switched from rice to potatoes because her weekly carb budget dropped by almost half.
