Hot take: I think people are sleeping on canned mackerel
I mean, I see everyone talking about canned tuna for cheap protein, but a can of mackerel is like $1.50 at my local Aldi and it's way more flavorful. I started adding it to pasta with some lemon and garlic instead of ground beef, and it cuts the cost of that meal in half. Has anyone else tried swapping in cheaper fish like this?

Yeah, the flavor is the real win. It makes a simple pasta dish feel way fancier without the work.

That sun-dried tomato oil is the secret weapon.

What if that oil just makes everything taste the same?

My local market has a whole shelf of canned fish in different sauces. The one packed in tomato sauce is my favorite for pasta because it makes its own quick sauce. You just flake it right into the hot noodles with a little pasta water.
