I found out dried beans are actually cheaper than canned by $2 a pound

I was doing my weekly meal prep for chili and ran the numbers on a calculator. Canned beans cost me $1.50 a can but a whole pound of dried pintos was only 99 cents at the grocery store. Has anyone else made the switch and found it worth the extra soaking time?

Tbh the math is a bit off there. A pound of dried beans cooks up to about 5 to 6 cups of cooked beans which is more like 3 or 4 cans worth depending on the brand. So you're really saving more like $3 to $4 per pound after you factor in the yield. The soaking is kind of a pain but I just dump them in water before bed and they're ready by morning. Honestly once you get used to it canned beans taste kind of mushy and salty in comparison.

Yeah the soaking thing really is the main hurdle lol. I got around it by just cooking a whole bag at once on Sunday and throwing the extras in the freezer. That way I don't have to remember to soak anything during the week, I just grab a frozen bag and heat it up. You're totally right about the texture difference though, once you make the switch canned beans feel like they've been sitting in a hot car all day or something haha. The salt thing is huge too, I never realized how much sodium was in those cans until I started tasting my own.
