My grandmas lentil soup recipe finally beat the canned stuff

Honestly, I spent years thinking homemade budget meals were a waste of time. Canned soup was 99 cents and done in five minutes, why bother with soaking beans and chopping veggies? Then my mom gave me a bag of dry lentils and my grandma's handwritten recipe card, mostly because I complained about grocery prices. I tried it one rainy Sunday, and the total cost came to like $3.50 for a big pot that lasted four meals. The texture and flavor were night and day, and I felt dumb for avoiding it so long. Now I make it every other week, and I'm curious what other old family recipes people swear by that actually save money instead of just tasting nostalgic. Has anyone else converted from premade stuff to a scratch recipe that ended up cheaper per serving?

Man, this is a whole lifestyle change over some lentils? I get that it's cheaper and probably tastes better, but let's not act like you discovered fire. You still have to soak stuff and chop onions, that's not exactly a picnic. But yeah, grandma's recipes usually hit different, mine has a cabbage thing that costs basically nothing and feeds a small army. I just don't know if I'd write a novel about it.
