My slow cooker lid shattered while I was making lentil soup last Tuesday
I had to fish glass shards out of a pot of $3 worth of lentils and carrots for 45 minutes, has anyone else had a lid just explode for no reason?

Oh man, 45 minutes? That's brutal... I'd have just tossed the whole thing after the first 10 minutes and ordered takeout. I had a similar thing happen with a Pyrex measuring cup once, it just popped in my hands while I was pouring hot broth. No warning at all, just glass everywhere. For a slow cooker lid to do that while it's just sitting there cooking, that's really messed up. Lentil soup is supposed to be the easy, cheap meal, not a glass-hunting mission.

That whole thing reminds me of how a lot of stuff we just take for granted nowadays kinda sucks quietly until it doesn't. Like, we buy this cheap glass lid or a Pyrex thing and assume it's built to last, but really it's just a ticking time bomb waiting for the right moment. I've noticed the same pattern with phone chargers, garden hoses, even some furniture these days. It's like everything is made to work just fine until it randomly fails in the worst possible way. A slow cooker lid shattering is a perfect example of that deal where you pay for convenience but get a hidden danger instead. Really makes you wonder what else in the kitchen is gonna give out next.

@ben_fisher I totally get the takeout impulse, but what gets me is how so many people just toss the whole meal. Not saying you're wrong, but everybody's first thought is "throw it out" when really those lentils and carrots are just fine after a thorough rinse. I actually kept my soup, just strained it through a cheesecloth and picked out any tiny bits I could see. My worry is more about the lid doing it again, like @ben_fisher said with the Pyrex, there's no warning sign with these things.
