Rant: chose a whole chicken over pre-cut breasts at Kroger and my meal prep got way better
I usually grab the $7 pack of boneless breasts but they were sold out at my Kroger in Akron, so I got a $5.49 whole bird instead. Roasting and pulling it myself took about 45 extra minutes but gave me meat for 4 lunches plus a pot of stock from the bones. Two breasts alone would have cost more than that entire chicken did. Now I'm wondering if I've been wasting cash on cut pieces this whole time. Anyone else doing the whole bird thing for lunches, and got a faster way to pull it apart?
How many hours are you actually saving by buying the cut stuff though? Like yeah the whole bird takes longer upfront but if you're already doing meal prep on Sunday anyway, that 45 min is just part of the cook time. What I really wanna know is whether you've tried the instant pot or crock pot route for the bird itself, cause I've heard throwing a whole chicken in there with some broth for like 25 min on high pressure makes it fall apart so fast you barely need to pull anything. Curious if the meat comes out as good for lunches that way or if it gets too mushy sitting in all that liquid. And do you shred it right after or let it cool first, cause I feel like that changes how easy it comes apart.
