Store brand canned tomatoes beat the fancy ones in my chili and I'm still mad about it
I made two pots of chili on Sunday for a family thing, one with a $4.99 can of San Marzano tomatoes from the fancy aisle and one with the $1.25 store brand crushed tomatoes, and I kept everything else the same on purpose. Same beef, same spices, same simmer time of about two hours. My brother in law tried both blind and picked the cheap one without thinking twice, said the sauce tasted richer and less sharp. I wanted to argue but he was right, the store brand ones had less of that tinny bite and broke down into the chili better. I always figured the pricier can meant better flavor but it just meant a fancier label and a longer drive to that store. Now I'm wondering what else I've been overpaying for just out of habit. Has anyone else done a blind taste test like this and been surprised by which one won?

Tried the same thing with olive oil once and let me tell you, my taste buds have the confidence of a guy who's been faking it at wine tastings for years. Pretty sure I've been paying extra for the pretty bottle this whole time.
