That guy who told me to buy bulk spices at the ethnic market was totally right
My coworker Marco swore I was wasting money on those tiny jars at the regular grocery store, so I finally drove to the Indian grocery on Elm Street last Saturday. I got a bag of cumin big enough to last a year for the same price as two little bottles at the chain store. Has anyone else found a specific store that saved them cash on staples like this?

Right off the bat, I want to say the real hidden savings is the dried lentils and beans at those markets. You can get a giant bag of red lentils for what a tiny bag costs at a regular store, and they last forever in a sealed container. Another tip nobody mentions is to check the expiration dates on the bulk spices before you buy, because some of those big bags might be closer to going stale. My local Asian market has a whole aisle of rice that costs half what the fancy brands charge, and it tastes exactly the same in my rice cooker. Just watch out for the giant bags of things like flour or sugar unless you have a big family, because they can go bad before you use them all up.
