The time I tried to stretch ground beef with lentils and my kids rebelled

I was in my kitchen in Columbus trying to make a 1 pound pack of ground beef feed 5 people for taco night. I thought adding a cup of cooked lentils would be a genius budget hack but my youngest took one bite and said "Mom, what is this sandy stuff?" and pushed her plate away. Then my husband admitted he thought the texture was off too so I ended up ordering $25 of takeout burritos anyway. Has anyone else had a lentil blending disaster or did I just pick the wrong lentil type?

Yeah using brown lentils for tacos is basically a war crime against ground beef. Green or red lentils might blend better but honestly it still tastes like you're eating dirt with taco seasoning sprinkled on top. The kid calling it sandy stuff was brutally honest and honestly I respect the kid for that. Your husband failing you too though that's a different level of betrayal. $25 on takeout burritos later and you learned the same lesson the rest of us did: lentils are fine in soup and that's about it. Better luck next time with the beans instead maybe.

My friend Kim tried this exact thing last month and her kid straight up asked if they were eating "angry mud." She spent the whole dinner trying to convince him it was just really dark taco meat while her husband quietly ordered pizza on his phone under the table. We still bring it up every time someone mentions "healthy alternatives" to ground beef.
