Thought canned beans were just as good as dried until I did a side by side with a $1.09 bag
I always figured dried beans were one of those things people brag about to feel better about being broke, so I kept buying the 89 cent cans at Aldi and never thought twice. Then a neighbor from El Paso told me her abuela would roll over in her grave if she saw me using canned pintos, so I gave in and bought a $1.09 bag of dried ones at the HEB down the street. First pot took almost three hours and I burned the bottom because I walked away to mow the yard, so that batch went in the trash. Second try I soaked them overnight, added a ham hock I got marked down to $2.50, and let them simmer while I did laundry. The difference was not even close. The dried ones had a creamy middle and actually tasted like something, while the canned ones just tasted like salt water and mush. I ran the numbers and that bag made about nine servings, which works out to roughly 12 cents a bowl. Now I keep two bags in the pantry at all times. Does anyone have a trick for speeding up the soak, or am I stuck planning dinner a day ahead forever?
Is canned vs dried beans really worth a whole side by side test though? I mean yeah fresh tastes better, that's true of pretty much everything, but the canned ones are still fine for a Tuesday night when you get home late and just want chili on the table in 20 minutes. Not everybody wants to plan dinner a day ahead or babysit a pot for hours, and calling that lazy is kind of silly. The price thing is real but 12 cents vs 40 cents a bowl is not exactly gonna change your life. You do you with your two bags in the pantry, but the rest of us are gonna keep grabbing the can sometimes.
