Unpopular opinion: My friend's fancy dinner party in Chicago showed me how dumb expensive food really is.
They spent over $300 on ingredients for one meal, and honestly, it didn't taste any better than my $15 lentil soup. I watched everyone stress over plating while I was just hungry. Now I refuse to feel bad about my simple, cheap meals. Anyone else get judged for not 'elevating' their home cooking?

Stress over plating" is the part that got me. I once saw a guy use tweezers to place a single herb on a steak while his potatoes went cold. At that point you're not cooking, you're just doing arts and crafts with food that costs too much. My best meals are the ones I eat straight from the pot.

Honestly, that tweezers thing is wild. I love how @sagejackson's family style fix keeps the focus on the food and the people.

My roommate used to spend 20 minutes arranging pasta on a plate. I started serving family style, just putting the whole pot of spaghetti and bowl of sauce in the middle of the table. Everyone digs in and the food stays hot. It completely changed how we eat together.
