Booked a hostel in Barcelona through a random travel app and saved $60 over the usual sites.

Went to check out after 3 days and the front desk lady said they didn't get my reservation at all, has anyone else had a booking just vanish like that?

Sounds like the app screwed up, not the hostel. Those random booking platforms are sketchy half the time and they don't actually confirm anything until you show up. You probably just got a phantom booking that never went through on their end.

I once booked a stay in Rome through a site called "HostelHop" and showed up to find the place was a laundromat with a sign taped to the door that said "we moved to a different block last year." Saved $50 though, so I guess that's a win. Had to sleep in a 24 hour McDonald's that night because my phone died and I couldn't figure out where the new hostel was. Learned my lesson about checking the address on Google Maps first.

Wait, you actually slept in a McDonald's in Rome? I gotta say, I used to think those weird booking sites were mostly fine if you just wanted to save a few bucks, but hearing this story kinda flipped my mind on that. I mean, I always figured a no-name site was a gamble, but I didn't think it could be that bad where you end up locked out with no phone and nowhere to go. That laundromat detail is brutal, man. I guess the real lesson is that sometimes saving $50 just isn't worth the headache when you're stuck in a foreign city at night. Thanks for posting this, because I was literally looking at a "deal" on some random site yesterday, and now I'm definitely just booking through the official place.
