Found a $3 tool that fixed my leaky hostel sink in Prague
Was staying at a place near the train station and the bathroom sink dripped all night... kept waking me up. Told the front desk twice, nothing happened. Finally went to a hardware store down the street, spent $3 on a little rubber washer, fixed it myself in 2 minutes. Got a free breakfast out of the front desk guy after he saw me do it. Has anyone else just fixed stuff yourself at a cheap hostel instead of waiting around?

Haha yeah, ryan_hart38, I actually read that fixing stuff yourself is super common in hostels in Southeast Asia. I saw a blog post where a guy carried a mini tool kit in his backpack specifically for this reason. It’s wild how often front desk staff just ignore basic complaints, but you can solve it in minutes for pocket change. I’ve never done it with plumbing, but I did tighten a loose doorknob in a hostel in Hanoi with a coin. Good on you for getting that free breakfast, that’s a nice bonus. Honestly, learning to do small repairs on the road is a real life skill.

Yeah I did the same thing in a hostel in Barcelona. Shower handle broke off, fixed it with a zip tie from my bag. Saved me from dealing with the front desk for three days.

Three days with a zip tie holding your shower together? Man, that's like asking for that thing to pop off mid-rinse and flood the whole bathroom. I get being handy, but if I'm paying for a bed I want the front desk to actually do their job, not just dodge it with a DIY fix.
