Found a motel in Amarillo last month that had a free pancake breakfast
I was driving through Texas and stopped at a Super 8 that had a pancake machine in the lobby, so I loaded up on breakfast and stuffed two extra pancakes in a napkin for lunch. That saved me about $12 on food that day, which got me thinking about how many hidden meal opportunities I miss at cheap hotels. Anyone else scout hotel breakfasts as part of their travel budget plan?

Heard a story from my friend Dave who stayed at a Motel 6 in Oklahoma and swiped an extra waffle for the road. He tucked it into his jacket pocket and forgot about it until the next morning when he pulled out a crumpled, syrup-sticky mess that had fused with a receipt. Said it was still edible but tasted like regret and old coffee.

oh man I am the QUEEN of this. once I stayed at a La Quinta that had that make your own waffle station and I made three waffles stacked them on a paper plate and ate them in the parking lot with my fingers because I was too cheap to buy lunch that day. I also grabbed like four yogurt cups and a handful of those little cereal boxes for the road. my friends call it "the Jessica diet" but honestly a free breakfast covers two meals minimum if you plan it right. I've definitely pocketed a bagel for dinner more times than I'd like to admit.

oh man I've totally been there with the "pancake lunch" move. one time I grabbed two of those little plastic wrapped danishes from a Days Inn continental breakfast and shoved them in my purse for later. forgot about them for a week and found them squished at the bottom under my wallet. still ate them though. they had that weird leathery texture and tasted like the inside of my bag but hey free food is free food. I once tried to smuggle an entire banana in my coat pocket and sat on it during a four hour drive. that was more sad than saving money.
