Found out the real deal with hostel loyalty programs after booking 15 nights in Berlin

I was staying at a chain hostel in Berlin for 2 weeks last spring and realized they had a loyalty program. I signed up thinking I'd get some free nights eventually. But when I checked my points after 15 nights, I only had enough for a free breakfast. That kind of stuff adds up slower than you think. Turns out most hostel programs give you like 1 point per euro spent and a free night costs 500 to 800 points. Meanwhile hotels give way better returns for similar prices in budget areas. Did the math and I could have saved maybe $60 just by booking through a random discount site instead of direct. Has anyone else noticed hostel loyalty perks are kind of a joke compared to hotel chains?

The real trick is that hostel loyalty programs actually hurt you more than help because they lock you into one chain in a market where variety matters way more for budget travelers. Shifting between different hostels depending on location and vibe gets you better value than chasing 1 point per euro that barely covers a coffee. Credit card sign up bonuses would probably get you a free hotel night way faster than staying 50 nights at a hostel.

Read a blog post last month that said hostel loyalty points are basically worthless compared to credit card rewards lol.

Totally agree with @rowanr88, it's like those store rewards cards that expire before you earn anything.
