Hostel in Barcelona double charged me and the manager just shrugged
Stayed at this place in the Gothic quarter last month, paid cash at check in like they asked. Then 3 days later my bank shows a credit card charge for the same amount. Manager said "oh the system must have done that" and wouldnt refund me. Took 2 weeks and a chargeback to get my money back. Anyone else had hostels pull this shady move?

Ugh that is so frustrating. I got double charged at a hostel in Rome once and the front desk guy just pointed at a sign that said "no refunds after 24 hours" like that was supposed to help. My bank eventually sorted it out but it took over a month. I guess the universe decided I needed to pay extra for a bed that creaked every time I breathed. Honestly surprised these places don't try to charge you for the oxygen you breathe while sleeping.

Honestly that oxygen thing is probably coming next with these places. I got double charged at a motel in Texas once and the guy tried to tell me it was a "system error" that would take two weeks to fix. I just asked him to print me a receipt showing both charges right in front of him and then I called my bank on the spot. The guy looked so uncomfortable he actually offered to refund it in cash from the register just to get me off the phone. These places bank on you being too tired or busy to fight it.

what worked for me was calling my bank right there from the lobby and putting it on speaker so the manager could hear me explain how their employee took a cash payment AND ran my card without permission. my bank reversed it in like 3 days cause they flagged it as fraud immediately. honestly making the hotel staff hear you talk to the bank gets them to suddenly "find" a way to fix things real fast.
