Hostels weren't saving me money like I thought

I spent 6 months in Southeast Asia staying in hostels for $10 a night. Then I added up all the money I spent on laundry, lockers, and buying dinner because the kitchen was always packed. A $25 Airbnb with a washing machine and a real kitchen would have been cheaper in the long run. Has anyone else crunched the numbers on their hostel stays?

20 bucks a night sounds way better than all that hassle.

oh man @jamesc79 you're totally right, that 20 bucks thing is actually a DEAL compared to some of the wild stuff people put up with. i've noticed this whole trend where people act like paying less means you should expect LESS than nothing, like basic decency gets thrown out the window. it's not just with rooms either, i see it everywhere now. like when you buy a cheap used car and the seller acts all offended when you ask if it runs, or when you get a budget haircut and they act like you're lucky they even showed up. it's like some places think being affordable is a favor they're doing you instead of a transaction.

Reminds me of the time I paid 40 bucks for a room in a converted garage that had a hammock instead of a bed. The host acted like it was some kind of luxury glamping experience. I slept on the concrete floor after the ropes gave out around 2 AM.
