Just realized I was booking flights all wrong for 10 years

I always booked the cheapest flight I could find through those third party sites like Expedia. Last month my cousin who travels for work told me to check the airline's own site first because they price match now and give you free seat selection. I looked it up and saved $45 on my trip to Denver by booking direct on Southwest. Has anyone else been doing this forever without knowing?

Third party sites saved me plenty over the years.

Oh boy, you just described my entire adult life. I spent years thinking I was being clever by hunting down deals on Priceline and Kayak, only to find out I was basically paying extra to sit in a middle seat with no bag. Last summer I booked a flight to Chicago through a third party site and ended up paying $30 extra just to pick a window seat at check-in. Meanwhile my buddy who booked direct got his aisle seat for free and a snack voucher because they overbooked. I felt like I'd been playing a game on hard mode for no reason.

@troyc17 that Chicago story hits way too close to home, man.
