My cousin roasted my hostel plan, now I book bunk rooms differently

Last spring I was bragging about a $28 a night dorm in Prague, and my cousin who travels a lot said, "congrats, you're paying to share a room with someone's alarm at 5am." She pointed out that private rooms in hostels often cost only $10 to $15 more, and you skip the snoring lottery. I tried it in Budapest, spent $42 for a private with a shared bath, and slept better plus kept my stuff locked up without a locker drama. Now I filter for private options first, then compare to dorms if the gap is over $20 a night. Has anyone else made the switch after one bad roommate story, or do you still roll the dice on dorms for the price?

Ugh, tell me about it! I got stuck in a dorm in Barcelona once with a guy who snored so loud the walls vibrated. Never again. I switched to private rooms after that trip and honestly, the extra $12 to $15 is worth every penny. You get your own space, you don't have to tiptoe around strangers, and you can actually leave your bag out without panicking. Plus, you can come in late without waking anyone up or feeling guilty. I still check dorm prices first, but unless the private is like double the cost, I'm booking it. Way better sleep and way less stress.
