My hostel's free breakfast turned into a free-for-all in Prague

Last Tuesday, the toaster at my hostel in Prague broke. It was the only one for about 40 guests. The line was huge, and people started trying to cook bread on the radiator. I just grabbed some cheese and fruit and left. Some folks think you should always pack a backup breakfast, like instant oatmeal. Others say it's the hostel's job to have a working kitchen. What's the better budget move: bringing your own food or trusting the free meal?

My hostel in Barcelona had one tiny microwave for 50 people. I saw a guy try to warm a croissant on a coffee maker's hot plate, it was a total mess. I always pack those little peanut butter packets now, saves so much hassle. You really can't trust the free meal to be anything more than a bonus.

Saw someone microwave a whole pizza box once.

Wonder if the pizza box actually caught fire or just made the whole room smell like hot cardboard. That microwave must have been a biohazard after that.
