Skip the tour bus, take the local bus in Lima and save $18

Last month I paid 4 soles to ride from Miraflores to the city center while the gringos on the hop-on bus shelled out $22 each for basically the same route. You just ask the driver where to get off for the main plaza, worked fine for me, has anyone else tried this in other South American cities?
