Stopped booking hostels 4 months ago, now I use this weird map trick

I used to just book whatever hostel popped up first on booking sites, ended up paying $58 a night in Lisbon for a place with bedbugs. Now I pull up Google Maps, zoom into a neighborhood like Alfama, and check which streets have laundromats nearby instead of looking at reviews first. Has anyone else tried this proximity trick or am I overthinking it?
