Talking to a hostel worker in Lisbon changed how I pack now

Was waiting for a bus in Lisbon last week and this guy who worked at a hostel near our Airbnb said he sees people show up with 40 pound suitcases all the time. He said the smart travelers all carry one 30 liter backpack and just wash stuff in the sink. I laughed at first, then realized I spent 60 euros on checked baggage fees on my last flight. Now I'm planning a 10 day trip to Morocco with just a carry on and a few quick dry shirts. Has anyone else actually tried the sink washing method or is it gross in practice?

Oh, I feel this so much! I used to be that person hauling a giant suitcase everywhere, and it honestly made travel miserable. The sink washing thing sounds odd, but after trying it on a shorter trip, I found it works fine if you pack quick-dry stuff and give yourself a few minutes at night. It is way less gross than it sounds, and I ended up feeling lighter and more free on the road.
