Tried the 5am hostel kitchen trick and it backfired spectacularly in Barcelona

Thought I'd beat the rush by cooking breakfast at 5am before my flight, but instead I woke up 14 backpackers and got volunteered to make pancakes for all of them, which cost me triple my grocery budget, so now I just eat the free hostel toast like everyone else.

So you woke up 14 people and made pancakes they didn't ask for. That's on you, not the trick. Nobody forced you to feed the whole room. You could have just said "no thanks" and made your eggs and gone back to bed. The free toast thing is fine anyway, it's just bread. People act like hostel breakfast is some life or death mission. You spent triple your budget because you CHOSE to play chef for strangers. That's not the trick backfiring, that's just poor decision making at 5am.

Oh man, I totally get where you're coming from but I gotta push back a little here! The whole point of that trick was to make people feel dumb about wanting basic breakfast, and giving them pancakes they didn't ask for feels more like a trap than a favor. Like, sure, he could've just made his eggs and chilled, but the other guy basically set him up to look like the jerk either way, you know? That's the sneaky part. If he made pancakes and woke everyone, he's "extra," but if he skipped the pancakes, the trick guy probably would've been like "see, you're not even adventurous." The budget thing I'll give you, that part is on him, but the social pressure in a hostel at 5am with strangers watching is way more real than it sounds on paper. So yeah, poor choices for sure, but I kinda blame the trick more than the hungry dude.
