Appreciation post: I stopped using cash envelopes after a year and my budget got better
Everyone in my local group in Phoenix swears by the cash envelope system. I tried it for a full year, starting in 2022. I had envelopes for groceries, fun money, everything. It felt like a hassle, always running to the ATM. Last month, I switched to just using my debit card and a simple app. I check it every morning. My grocery spending actually dropped by about $40 a week because I'm not rounding up with cash. I feel more in control seeing the exact numbers. Has anyone else moved away from cash budgeting and found it worked better?

Cash is a pain to deal with. The envelope system made me spend more because I felt like I had to use it all. Seeing the real numbers in an app is way better for my brain. It stops that weird mental game of rounding up with physical money. I switched to card tracking last year and never looked back.

Wait, you actually spent more with the envelopes? That's wild... @mia102. I always heard it was supposed to do the exact opposite, make you stop when the cash was gone. The rounding up thing is so real though, a five dollar bill feels like free money somehow. Tracking on a phone just kills that excuse, you're right. Makes you face the ugly truth right there in the numbers.

Yeah I was all in on cash for years. But hearing you say that about the envelope pressure actually makes sense. The app just shows the cold hard math.
