I finally started tracking my grocery runs after my sister showed me her receipts
My sister was visiting from Sacramento last month and we split the shopping for a family dinner. She pulled out an envelope of receipts and added up what she paid for each item, then did the same for mine. I had no clue my quick trips were costing me around $60 extra each week because I never wrote anything down. So I grabbed a small notebook and started logging what I buy and what it costs, just for two weeks now. Did anyone else get surprised by their own numbers when they first started writing it down?
Man, this hit home for me too, but it was my buddy Dave who got the wake up call. He swore he was spending maybe $100 a week on food, just him and his dog. His wife made him save every receipt for a month and he came out at $187 a week average. He was FLOORED. Turned out most of it was the little stuff, gas station snacks, a drink here and there, grabbing lunch out because he forgot to pack one. None of it felt like much in the moment but it added up FAST. He keeps a running total in his phone notes now and says it's the only reason he finally stuck to a budget. Two weeks in is when the pattern starts showing up, so keep at it.
