I thought the cash envelope system was just for people who can't control themselves

My wife made us try it for our grocery budget, and I rolled my eyes for a solid month. We put $600 in an envelope for the whole month, and when it was gone, we were done. I was sure it would be a hassle, but seeing the cash disappear made me stop buying that $8 fancy cheese every trip. Now we actually have money left at the end of the month. Has anyone else had a dumb idea turn out to be the best thing for their spending?

Check the math, that's $550.

Actually that math seems right for a cheap city. Rent can still be that low if you look hard enough. People just assume prices are high everywhere now.
