My neighbor's yard sale made me check my own spending

He sold a bunch of stuff he bought on impulse and said it was like getting a tax refund. I went home and canceled three subscriptions I forgot about, saving $45 a month. Anyone else do a 'spending audit' after seeing something simple like that?

My buddy saw his sister's packed storage unit and had a total lightbulb moment. He went through his own garage and found a bunch of unopened hobby gear he'd bought years ago, stuff he totally forgot he even owned. It's crazy how seeing someone else's clutter can snap your own spending into focus.

My dad did something similar after he saw my cousin selling her whole vinyl collection at a flea market. He went home and found a whole box of cassette tapes from the 80s he forgot he even had, plus an old Walkman that still worked. He ended up selling most of it online for about sixty bucks. Now he keeps a list on the fridge of stuff he bought but never touched, and he forces himself to use it before buying anything new.

That's a solid move, but it's not really a tax refund. More like getting your own money back that you were just wasting. Good catch on those subscriptions though.

Isn't it still a refund if the government gives you money back? They had it, now I have it. Feels the same in my bank account.
