PSA: I finally figured out why my grocery bill was always so high

I was looking at my bank statement from three years ago and saw I was spending over $800 a month on food for just me. The tip-off was a single receipt from the store that had three different kinds of fancy cheese and a bag of pre-cut fruit. I realized I was buying a lot of small, expensive convenience items without even thinking about it. Now I make a list and stick to it, no more wandering the aisles. Anyone else catch themselves doing this and have a good way to stop?

Yeah, that "shop after you've eaten" tip is a total game changer.

Wait, $800 a month for one person? That's like a car payment. How were you even fitting all that food in your fridge? I get the convenience trap though, those little things add up so fast. My trick is to only shop after I've eaten a meal, I buy way less junk when I'm not hungry.

My friend used to order delivery for every meal, and his credit card bill looked like a grocery store receipt.

Forget the fridge, think about the trash can. I had a buddy doing the same thing and his recycling bin was just a tower of branded cardboard boxes every week. The real cost isn't just the food, it's all the single-use containers, the plastic cutlery packets you never open, and those little sauce cups that pile up. You're basically paying a premium to create a huge amount of waste, which feels bad even before you look at your bank statement.
