Question about the 50/30/20 rule after my own mess

Honestly, I was blowing my whole check on takeout and random stuff for months, no plan at all. Ngl, I started using the 50/30/20 split in a simple spreadsheet last January and saved $1,200 by April just by seeing where my money was actually going. The big change was cutting my 'fun money' category in half and putting that straight into savings before I could touch it. Has anyone else had a rule that finally clicked for them after trying a bunch of different apps?

Honestly thought all those rules were too rigid until I tried the envelope system for real. Something about using cash for my fun money made it impossible to overspend.

Yeah, it's funny how the physical part makes a difference. @the_elizabeth is onto something with the cash envelopes. I mean, I had the same thing happen when I switched to a debit card just for my fun budget instead of my main card. Seeing that one account get low just hits different than looking at a spreadsheet number. Makes you stop and think before you buy another coffee or whatever. Maybe it's just me, but that little bit of friction is what actually changes the habit for good.

Sounds like a lot of extra work to me, @the_max.
